If you've listened to Nigerian music in the past decade, you've undoubtedly heard the work of Sarz. Born Osabuohien Osaretin, the Edo State native has produced some of the biggest hits in Afrobeats history, including Wizkid's "Saro" and "Come Closer", Burna Boy's "Gbona", and his own chart-topping "Happiness" with Asake.

We sat down with the elusive producer at his Lagos studio to discuss his journey, creative philosophy, and where he sees Afrobeats heading.

Q: How did you develop your signature sound?

"I never set out to have a signature sound, honestly. I just make what feels right. Growing up, I listened to everything - Fela, Michael Jackson, Dr. Dre, Timbaland, Pharrell. I think subconsciously, I absorbed all those influences and created something uniquely mine. The Sarz sound is really just me being myself in the studio without filters."

Q: What's your creative process like when working with artists?

"Every session is different. With Wizkid, we barely talk. He'll come in, I'll play some ideas, and he'll just nod or shake his head. When he nods, magic happens. With younger artists, I spend more time teaching and explaining. The key is creating an environment where the artist feels comfortable enough to be vulnerable."

Q: What advice do you have for aspiring producers?

"Stop trying to sound like everyone else. I see so many young producers making beats that sound exactly like what's already out there. Find your unique voice. Also, learn music theory. It's not just about clicking notes on a piano roll. Understanding chord progressions and harmonies will take your music to another level."

Q: What's next for you?

"I'm working on my debut artist album. People know me as a producer, but I have a lot to say as an artist. I'm also building a studio complex to nurture young talent. Afrobeats is just getting started, and I want to be part of its evolution for decades to come."
